#75 Spring 2014 Young Readers Reviews
Lovely and lilting verses meet bright colours
In this nostalgic paean, a young child revels in the numerous delights his Poppy’s beach holds. As seagulls cry and fishermen wave, this little boy breathes deeply of the salty air and savours all the things he has come to associate with this special place in his world.
From seaweed and jellyfish to whales and dolphins, there are a multitude of magnificent discoveries to be made. Finding seashells, building sandcastles and bonfires on the beach—moments that are filled with laughter and music and loving arms to hold a sleepy boy: these are just some of the many wondrous moments to cherish on Poppy’s beach.
Susan Pynn Taylor’s lovely and lilting verse rolls along like the sea itself, capturing not only the rugged beauty of sea and shore, but also the incomparable feeling of being surrounded by love, safe in the heart of one’s family. The illustrations, with their bright colours and bold outlines, perfectly complement this joyful ode. Readers of all ages will delight in the small yet timeless wonders celebrated in this book.
