Farewell to Floods, Fiona and Fires – poem for Nova Scotia
“Time and a Place for Eff Words”
FLOODS
Farewell to Nova Scotia … Whoa! Hold on!
Nothing motherly about nature now
certainly not the kind I was raised by
who had no interest in taking lives
or causing anyone to evacuate their home.
Some may ask, “What is happening?” or
be more daring, “Is Earth that angry?”
It has been said, “What goes up must come down.”
I wonder if we know what’s going up?
There’s no question about what it’s coming back as,
really, does rain need to be a record holder?
Are amounts necessary? Falling at such speeds?
Causing what shouldn’t be under any water
to endure unbelievable heights and depths.
Miraculously rescues take place at all!
FIRES
Farewell to Nova Scotia … No! No way!
Everything captivating in campfires’ flames
leads the masses to ask about proper dousing
or the genius who knew how to light a match
and wondered if dry anything would ignite.
It has been said, “Stay the blazes home!”
Well, the way the weather owns our worlds
more and more as each year ages forests
leaving perfect amounts of downfall kindling
perhaps it is time to say, “Keep the blazes contained”
or something to prevent further human mishap.
FIONA
Farewell to Nova Scotia … Not a chance!
Something in basements goes on as reminder
for us who lost the achievements rooms kept
on walls made of uniquely milled pine boards
coated with stain and varnish a carpenter
chose over forty years ago when the weathers
seemed sane and not out to ruin comfort
recently laid carpet provided for relieved bare feet
after the first flood left by a tired water-heater.
It has been said, “Hurricanes are named like babies.”
Perhaps, but whoever does name them all
must not have had a chance to be a parent, or
better yet, a homeowner alone with damages
and the inability to forget that one name now
I find makes me think of a singer, and wife
in a movie with that funny ogre, makes me relive
the disbelief of how little the bank was willing
to be a generous insurer, to choose quick provision
despite what were our endless on-time payments.
