Sue Goyette + Madhur Anand, plus Lawrence Hill in conversation with Sylvia Hamilton

October 2, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm America/Halifax

Sue Goyette’s poetry explores—among other themes—the wilderness within us and without us. She writes with deep humanity and hospitality, and with an uncanny ability to look at the stuff of our lives slantwise, and show it in to us anew. She has won the Pat Lowther Prize and the Atlantic Poetry Prize, and was a finalist for the Griffin Prize and the Governor General’s Literary Award for poetry. Her book Ocean was the Nova Scotia Masterwork in 2015. Her new book is Monoculture. Madhur Anand’s debut collection of poems A New Index for Predicting Catastrophes was a finalist for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry, named one of 10 all-time “trailblazing” poetry collections by the CBC and received a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly. Her second collection of poems is Parasitic Oscillations. She is a professor of ecology and sustainability at the University of Guelph, where she was appointed the inaugural Director of the Guelph Institute for Environmental Research. Sue and Madhur will be in conversation with each other about poetry, the natural world, and our place in it.

Then, Lawrence Hill joins filmmaker, historian, and poet Sylvia Hamilton in conversation about his bestselling, much beloved book The Book of Negroes. First published in 2007, The Book of Negroes is a sweeping story that transports the reader from a tribal African village to a plantation in the southern United States, from the teeming Halifax docks to the manor houses of London, The Book of Negroes introduces one of the strongest female characters in Canadian fiction, one who cuts a swath through a world hostile to her colour and her sex.
Published around the world, the novel won numerous prizes including the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and CBC Radio’s Canada Reads. We’re honoured to help celebrate this remarkable novel.

Tickets for this event are $10 and include both conversations
