JACK PINE FOLK CLUB

September 16, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm America/Halifax

JACK PINE FOLK CLUB

Wild Threads Literary Festival is proud to present this one-of-a-kind event hosted by Music PEI Award Winner SHANE PENDERGAST as he welcomes to the stage a seamless blend of award winning authors, folk music performers, poets and storytellers. Featuring readings from authors Nicholas Herring and Bren Simmers, and musical performances from famed Island artists Mark Haines and fiddler Rowen Gallant. This new addition to our festival pays respect to the tradition of coffeehouses of the 60’s and will all be held in the historic setting of the Victoria Playhouse in beautiful Victoria-by-the-Sea.

Presenter Bios:
Nicholas Herring is a carpenter and writer whose work has appeared in The Puritan and The Fiddlehead. He graduated from St. Jerome’s University with an honours degree in English Literature and attended the University of Toronto where he completed an MA in Creative Writing. His debut novel Some Hellish was the 2022 Winner of the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Herring lives in Murray Harbour, PEI.
Bren Simmers is the author of four books, most recently If, When (Gaspereau Press, 2021). She is the winner of the CBC Poetry Prize and The Malahat Review Long Poem Prize. Her poetry collection Spell ‘World’ Backwards is forthcoming in 2024. She lives on Epekwitk (PEI).
Mark Haines musical career spans forty years and counting! Over that time he has performed in bands, in stage productions and as a solo artist. He has played concerts, festivals, conventions, pubs and churches all across Canada and the United States. Mark is a multi-instrumentalist and enjoys a roots approach to all his music. He is a consummate musician, a gifted entertainer and a successful educator. His repertoire, sense of humour and personable style make him popular wherever he plays. He has commercially released six recordings and has appeared as a guest on many others. Since 2013 he has teamed up with PEI comedian & author Patrick Ledwell for The Island Summer Review and together they have performed consistently sold out shows at Harmony House Theatre in Hunter River, PEI.
