Meet Prince Edward Island’s Independent Book Publishers
Prince Edward Island may be Canada’s smallest province, but its literary presence is anything but small. Home to world-renowned classics like Anne of Green Gables and a thriving community of writers and publishers, PEI continues to nurture stories that celebrate both the island’s unique identity and its place in the wider world. From innovative new presses to long-established publishers, the Island’s book culture is deeply rooted in creativity, community, and a love of storytelling.
Acorn Press

Founded in 1994 by poet and publisher Laurie Brinklow, Acorn Press has become a cornerstone of Prince Edward Island’s literary scene. Dedicated to publishing “Books about Prince Edward Island by Prince Edward Islanders,” Acorn celebrates the province’s rich storytelling tradition while sharing it with the world. Their catalogue spans poetry, fiction, history, folklore, and children’s literature, with many titles earning regional and national awards. With a commitment to quality design and local printing, Acorn Press continues to nurture and showcase PEI’s vibrant literary culture.
Island Studies Press

Since 1985, Island Studies Press has been publishing books that celebrate the culture, history, and environment of islands, with a special focus on Prince Edward Island. As the publishing arm of the Institute of Island Studies at UPEI, it produces 2–4 titles a year, ranging from scholarly works to accessible trade non-fiction and poetry. Many of its books have won or been shortlisted for Atlantic and PEI Book Awards, including recent prizewinners like “My island’s the house I sleep in at night” and “Home is Where the Water Is”. With a commitment to telling island stories, Island Studies Press continues to highlight the voices, history, and heritage of Epekwitk/PEI.
Pownal Street Press

Founded in 2022 by Genevieve Loughlin and Mo Duffy, Pownal Street Press brings a fresh and modern approach to publishing from Prince Edward Island. The press was created to amplify authentic, brave nonfiction stories—books that explore grief, resilience, transformation, and the everyday human experience. Offering both traditional publishing and custom publishing streams, they provide authors with the support of a professional team while giving them flexibility and creative freedom. In just a short time, Pownal Street Press has published powerful works for adults and children, distributed widely across Canada and the U.S. With a strong focus on community, connection, and quality storytelling, they are quickly becoming a dynamic voice in the Canadian publishing landscape.
Whether you’re looking for poetry that captures the island’s landscapes, nonfiction that dives into its history and culture, or children’s books with heart and imagination, PEI’s publishers offer something for every reader. Supporting these presses means keeping Island voices strong and ensuring that stories from Epekwitk continue to reach readers across Canada and beyond.
