Breakwater Books Acquires Creative Book Publishing
Independently owned Breakwater Books has purchased Creative Book Publishing from TC Media. The acquisition adds another 230 active titles to Breakwater’s list of more than 300 titles. It is the largest such acquisition in Newfoundland history.
Rebecca Rose, owner and president of Breakwater Books, released the following statement:
We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to purchase Creative Book Publishing and its outstanding portfolio of book titles, and to welcome so many talented writers into the Breakwater family. At a time when the book publishing industry is experiencing challenges and intense changes both within the province and across the country, we feel this transaction ensures the vitality of our local industry. Breakwater and Creative have been friendly competitors for years. We’ve hosted events and festivals together, all in the name of promoting Newfoundland writers and books, and this purchase seems like the best and most natural way to honour that legacy and move forward with an even greater sense of community. We’re nearly doubling the size of our family, and we’re excited to reach out to our new authors, to answer any questions they might have, and to make this transition happen easily and effectively.
Julia Kamula, Senior Vice President, Local Solutions, TC Media, adds:
Following the recent sale of our media assets in Atlantic Canada, and after careful consideration we accepted the offer proposed by Breakwater Books Ltd. to acquire Creative Book Publishing. In light of the similar values shared by both of our organizations including publishing innovation and leadership we felt that this was an excellent fit on many levels. The accomplished work and storytelling of our authors will carry on through Breakwater Books Ltd., a company recognized for the quality and breadth of its publications and its strong commitment to the publishing community in Atlantic Canada. We are confident of the continued sustainability of our operations as a result of this transaction and believe that our authors are in good hands. I would like to thank all those involved in Creative Books for their dedication over the years and wish them continued success.
Breakwater Books was founded in 1973 and is Newfoundland and Labrador’s oldest and most established publisher.
