Alex Saunders
Alex Saunders is an Inuit Elder of mixed blood with Innu and British ancestry, born in the original hamlet of Davis Inlet in 1940. Gifted with a knack for writing, he only recently began to seriously put pen to paper and in 2020 received the Percy Janes First Novel Award for Safe in a Dangerous Place, kamatsiagit ulugianattumi. He is also the recipient of the 2017 Lawrence Jackson Writers Award and the 2016 Northern Public Affairs Emerging Writers Award. Saunders’s goal is to leave a legacy behind for Inuit, Innu, Labradoreans, northerners, and anyone else across Canada—and the world—who might be curious to learn about traditional Inuit life and culture and the adventurous, unconquered spirit of an Inuit man.
