Songs & Stories in Margaree

November 26, 2022 @ 11:00 pm - November 27, 2022 @ 2:00 am UTC

***Sorry, we’ve sold out!***

A cosy evening on the farm, with author Alexander MacLeod and musicians Màiri Britton & Bradley Murphy and Morgan Toney & Keith Mullins

Gather by the wood stove to hear Gaelic songs & harp music with Màiri Britton and Bradley Murphy , followed by a reading and interview with author Alexander MacLeod (reading from his wildly acclaimed new story collection, Animal Stories ), and wind up the night with a rousing performance by Mi’kmaw fiddler and singer Morgan Toney with renowned musician Keith Mullins .
This is a true Cape Breton experience, hosted in a small, intimate outbuilding beside the farmhouse; washrooms are located in the farmhouse (or an outdoor facility) and there is a short uphill walk from the parking area (though those with mobility needs can drive right up to the building). We hope you’ll join us for a beautiful evening of music and words in the heart of Margaree…

Màiri Britton ’s love of the Gaelic language and culture was sparked at the age of five through attending the local Fèis in her hometown of Edinburgh. Since then, it has steered her journey to the Hebrides, to Ireland, and now to Mi’kma’ki (Alba Nuadh/Nova Scotia) where she works as a Gaelic educator, musician and cultural project-manager. A singer, harpist and step dancer, Màiri performs as a solo artist, in a duo with Cape Breton musician Bradley Murphy, and with the North American trad band Fàrsan.
Bradley Murphy is a Gàidhlig Singer, fiddler, and multi-instrumental musician born in rural Unama’ki – Cape Breton Island. He breathes new life into traditional Gàidhlig songs and fiddle tunes of his ancestors showcasing their relevance and beauty.
Alexander MacLeod ’s short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Granta , and The O Henry Prize Stories . His first collection, Light Lifting (Biblioasis), was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. Alexander lives in Dartmouth and teaches at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. His most recent book is Animal Person (2022), a magnificent collection about the needs, temptations, and tensions that exist just beneath the surface of our lives.
Morgan Toney , a Mi’kmaq fiddler and singer, brings together the fiery fiddling of Cape Breton Island with the old songs of the Mi’kmaq with brilliance and heart. First Flight, Toney’s award nominated debut album, celebrates language and heritage in Toney’s transformation of traditional songs like the Ko’jua and the Mi’kmaq Honour Song alongside highly original songcraft. This album won two awards at the 2022 East Coast Music Awards and Morgan has since been tearing up stages from Portugal to Kansas City and now at the Cabot Trail Writers Festival.
Keith Mullins was born in Cape Breton, and, for a quarter-century, he and music have been synonymous with the East Coast Music Scene. His professional career, beginning at the ripe age of 15, has taken him around the world and onto many stages sharing the spotlight with some genuine musical greats such as Matt Anderson, Ron Hynes, Bruce Guthro, Lennie Galant, Gordie Sampson, Jimmy Rankin, Natalie MacMaster, The Mellotones, Garrett Mason and many, many more. Keith has garnered several industry Awards, including two ECMAs and six Music Nova Scotia awards, two of which being Musician of the Year.
