Congratulations to Gary Collins, who has won the first annual NL Public Libraries NL Reads competition.

On February 28th, 2018 the first NL Reads event was held at the AC Hunter Library in St.John’s, Newfoundland. Sculpted by NL Public Libraries Collections Librarian, Jewel Cousens, this program was designed to be similar to the popular literary event, CBC Canada Reads. NLReads showcased four books from local authors to celebrate Love Our Local Author (LOLA) Month.

Four readers were selected to read and defend their titles, Jane Adey of CBC for Joel Thomas Hynes’ novel We’ll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night, author Paul Rowe for Alan Doyle’s A Newfoundlander in Canada, library assistant Daniel Murphy for Gary Collins’ The Last Beothuk, and library patron Cynthia Kelly for Bridget Canning’s The Greatest Hits of Wanda Jaynes.

The voting was held online and at libraries across Newfoundland and Labrador with the final votes taking place live at the event.

November 3, 2017 by Stephanie Domet

This peppy memoir of a life on the road and at home finds Alan Doyle, singer-songwriter and erstwhile front man for Great Big Sea, in fine form. Doyle has an eye for details and an ear for a good story, and a well-honed ability to play out a yarn of his own.

Where Doyle’s first book, Where I Belong, told the story of his poor-but-happy childhood in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland and set the stage for his rise with Great Big Sea, A Newfoundlander in Canada offers some of the gritty details of that rise. Doyle covers everything from the business-like way the band always conducted itself (finding ways to get paid not just by the venue they were playing, but also beer companies whose banners they flew on stage, paying themselves two-hundred-and-fifty dollars a week each, while putting all other proceeds into a band bank account for the future) to the realities of life on the Canadian road when your starting point is Newfoundland and Labrador (epic ferry crossings to Cape Breton, followed by hours and hours in cars just this side of breaking down, to crummy motel rooms shared with bandmates).

Doyle is an easy companion in these stories of a life on the road. He wisely breaks them up with vignettes from Newfoundland and Labrador. This book is as much a musing on Canada, and Newfoundland and Labrador’s place in it, as it is a memoir of the early days of a soon-to-be-famous travelling band.

Though Doyle doesn’t come to any deep or particularly surprising insights about this country or its parts (Ontario is Newfoundland’s most popular and successful sibling; Manitoba is the sister you think you know everything about but you really don’t; Alberta is Newfoundland’s big brother who moved away before you were even born and on whose couch you will inevitably sleep sometime), his travelogue reveals a kind and gentle Canada where the people may occasionally be a little odd, but their hearts are in the right place.

There is one fly that sticks in the ointment Doyle slathers on. He writes of Great Big Sea being invited to play on Parliament Hill before the Queen and the band’s rightful excitement about the gig—only to discover organizers planned to drag the band on stage in a dory and introduce them as Newfies.

Doyle reminds us that while he was born in Canada, his parents and his grandparents were not. They were born Newfoundlanders, through and through. Not that long ago, Newfoundland and Labrador was still the punch line of a mean national joke.

Even in the relating of this tale, and the determined way in which Doyle dug in his heels with the show’s producers, he is deft enough to bring a light and comedic touch to the telling. It’s a generous spoonful of sugar Doyle deals out to help the medicine go down.

And really, that’s as political or controversial or revealing as this book gets. This is a book that entertains, provides a few comfortable hours in the thrall of a pretty great storyteller and a warm and cozy feeling about the Canada in which you live.

For all Canada’s actual diversity, it’s a pretty homogenous rendering Doyle serves up. His final words on the subject are a ringing endorsement of multiculturalism and its success, and to a critical reader, this conclusion arises out of a pretty shallow bed.

Still, there is good company and charm to be found on every page.

In a ceremony at Government House in St. John’s Wednesday afternoon, poet Carmelita McGrath was named winner of the E.J. Pratt Award for Escape Velocity published by Goose Lane Editions. Retired veterinarian Andrew Peacock won the Newfoundland and Labrador Book Award for Non-Fiction with his debut book Creatures of the Rock:A Veterinarian’s Adventures in Newfoundland published by Doubleday Canada. The wins represent a first for both well-established author McGrath and for novice author Peacock. Each winner received a cash prize of $1,500. The four runners-up—Michael Crummey and Mary Dalton for poetry, and Alan Doyle and Janet Merlo for non-fiction—each received $500.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards are sponsored by the Literary Arts Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and administered by the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador under the distinguished patronage of The Honourable Frank Fagan, Lt.- Gov. of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“This was an extraordinary year,” says Denise Flint, president of the Writers’ Alliance.  “All three finalists for the E.J. Pratt Poetry Award are accomplished poets. In contrast, the finalists for the NL Book Award for Non-fiction represent debut books.”

“We are extremely grateful to Kathy Pratt LeGrow and the Jimmy Pratt Foundation for funding the E.J. Pratt Poetry Award again this year,” says Jennifer Morgan, president of the Literary Arts Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“We thank WANL and anonymous donors who stepped up with one-time donations to ensure the Non-fiction Book Award went ahead this year. The Foundation welcomes funders who would like to take advantage of having their names associated with the Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards.”

Andrew Peacock author or Creatures of the Rock
Andrew Peacock author or Creatures of the Rock

Non-fiction judges Robin McGrath, Bert Riggs, and Joan Sullivan said of Creatures of the Rock: “It was the laid back attitude of the people of Newfoundland and the offer of professional positions for him and his wife that brought Andrew Peacock to Newfoundland, but it was animals that kept him here. When we think of a veterinarian we usually think of a person who is trained to treat our cats, dogs and other house pets, and while Peacock did that as a sideline, his major clients were the cows, horses, sheep, goats and pigs of the communities of Conception and Trinity Bay, with the odd moose, caribou, whale, lynx and polar bear thrown in for good measure… Creatures of the Rock is a thoughtful and highly entertaining reflection on life as a veterinarian from someone who has truly become ‘one of us’.”

Carmelita McGrath author of Escape Velocity
Carmelita McGrath author of Escape Velocity

Poetry judges Robin Durnford, Sue Goyette and George Murray, said of Escape Velocity: “Each poem in Carmelita McGrath’s Escape Velocity is its own little journey, sometimes without any obvious destination. And yet her delicate rhythms pull us, almost gravitationally, into meditations such as “How to Leave an Island” where we stare with her over “a banned ocean, poised on the very edge of flight.” In her first collection in over a decade, McGrath offers us earthly objects that feel weightless because of the deftness of her language. By the time the final poem makes its escape we don’t want to go back.”

The Awards consider books released in the two previous years. In even-numbered years, fiction and children’s/young adult literature are recognized, in alternate years; works of non-fiction and poetry are recognized.

This year’s E.J. Pratt Award was made possible, once again, by the generous sponsorship of the Jimmy Pratt Foundation. The Awards are also supported by The Telegram, Perfect Day, and the NLTA.

In addition to sponsoring the NL Book Awards, LAFNL offers an intense writing retreat every other autumn: Piper’s Frith: Writing at Kilmory.
