Jordan Trethewey is Fredericton’s Next Poet Laureate

Fredericton, NB (August 9, 2021) – Jordan Trethewey is the City of Fredericton’s next poet laureate. He will serve for a two-year term starting September 2021.
Trethewey is a published poet who writes and edits professionally. He began exploring his voice in creative writing classes at both St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick and by participating as a playwright, director and actor with Theatre St. Thomas and the NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival.
Jordan Trethewey moved to Fredericton in 2000 to attend university and has since built his life here. He holds an undergraduate degree from St. Thomas University and a Diploma in Journalism from Holland College on Prince Edward Island and currently works as a creative communications professional. Trethewey is the father of two, an enthusiastic school committee member and coach of minor floor ball and basketball teams.
Trethewey is the author of four books of poetry, including Spirits for Sale, and the forthcoming collection, Unexpected Mergers. He has dozens of other publishing credits to his name, both online and in print, and has also published a collection of short fiction available on his website, www.jordantretheweywriter.wordpress.com.
For many years, Trethewey curated a writer’s workshop called The Vagabond Trust as a way to maintain creative connectivity to the Fredericton writing community. He is now an editor at two international Arts publications: Open Arts Forum and Red Fez. Trethewey is actively involved in the arts community, has hosted local readings and is a member of Urban Sketchers Fredericton, a local group of sketch enthusiasts.
He has proposed initiatives to promote active literary engagement in schools as a means to give children and youth the confidence that their words matter, including a workshop and an archival website to publish the students’ work. Details on these and other potential projects will be released at a later date.
About the Poet Laureate
The City of Fredericton’s Poet Laureate is a two-year term position. Over the course of their tenure, the Poet Laureate will propose and deliver a legacy project which may include a publication, community art project, installation, or another initiative. In addition, they will be required to compose 6 original works of poetry annually for selected official City events and Council meetings. These could include the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony (December), National Poetry Month celebrations (April) and other occasions as they arise.
The Poet Laureate position was established in 2016 and was an action item of the City’s Culture Plan, adopted in 2014.

Fredericton (N.-B.) (09 août 2021) — Jordan Trethewey a été choisi à titre de poète officiel de la Ville de Fredericton pour un mandat de deux ans à partir de septembre 2021.
Poète publié, Jordan Trethewey se consacre à professionnellement à la rédaction et à la révision. Il a commencé à explorer sa voix dans des cours d’écriture créative offerts à l’Université St. Thomas et à l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick et à agir comme dramaturge, metteur en scène et acteur auprès de Theatre St. Thomas et du NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival.
M. Trethewey a déménagé à Fredericton en 2000 afin de poursuivre des études universitaires, ville qu’il n’a plus quittée. Titulaire d’un diplôme de premier cycle de l’Université St. Thomas et d’un diplôme en journalisme du Holland College de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, il travaille en tant que professionnel de la communication créative. Sur le plan personnel, ce père de deux enfants est membre enthousiaste du comité scolaire et entraîneur d’équipes floorball mineur et de basketball mineur.
Jordan Trethewey est l’auteur de quatre recueils de poésie, dont Spirits for Sale, et de Unexpected Mergers, à paraître. Il a également signé des dizaines d’écrits, tant en ligne qu’imprimés, sur son site personnel, www.jordantretheweywriter.wordpress.com.
Pendant de nombreuses années, M. Trethewey a organisé un atelier d’écriture intitulé « The Vagabond Trust » afin d’entretenir un lien créatif avec la communauté littéraire de Fredericton. Il est actuellement rédacteur en chef de deux publications artistiques internationales : Open Arts Forum et Red Fez. Par ailleurs, il s’intéresse activement au milieu artistique, notamment en tant que membre d’Urban Sketchers Fredericton, un groupe local d’amateurs de croquis, en plus d’avoir organisé des lectures locales.
En tant que poète officiel, Jordan Trethewey a suggéré des initiatives visant à promouvoir un engagement littéraire actif dans les écoles afin de donner aux enfants et aux adolescents la certitude que leurs mots comptent, notamment sous forme d’atelier et d’un site web d’archivage pour la publication de travaux d’élèves. Des détails sur ces projets, entre autres, seront présentés plus tard.
À propos du poste de poète officiel
Poète officiel de la Ville de Fredericton est un poste d’une durée de deux ans. Au cours de son mandat, la poète officielle ou le poète officiel proposera et réalisera un projet patrimonial pouvant comprendre une publication, un projet artistique local, une installation ou une autre initiative. Par ailleurs, la ou le poète officiel devra chaque année composer six œuvres poétiques originales pour certains événements officiels comme la cérémonie annuelle d’illumination de l’arbre (décembre) et le mois national de la poésie (avril) ainsi que et des séances du conseil municipal.
Le poste de poète officiel a été créé en 2016 dans le cadre du Plan pour la culture que la municipalité a adopté en 2014.
