Hope Dalvay Shares Her Other Favourite Read from our #GiftAtlantic Collection
Christmas with Maud Lewis
Lance Woolaver and Bob Brooks
Goose Lane Editions
If you’re searching for a gift to spread a little joy this holiday season, then I recommend picking up Christmas with Maud Lewis by Lance Woolaver and Bob Brooks. With more than 30 paintings by the beloved Nova Scotian folk artist, it is simply joy in book form.
The vibrant colours and playfulness of the Christmas and winter scenes will delight and awaken the child within. Lewis’s paintings are charming in their candidness, capturing moments of wonder as well as the occasional mishap. The characters in her art don’t sit still—they are too busy enjoying the simple pleasures of life.
My favourite scenes are those of children on sleds or skis careening down a snow-covered hill. Some make it successfully to the bottom, while others wipe out spectacularly. Lewis’s depiction of their carefree abandon on a winter’s day makes me want to brave the cold and enjoy the great outdoors, too.
During the holiday season, I display my copy of Christmas with Maud Lewis on a cookbook stand. Those who know me know it’s certainly not being used for cookbooks! On each day of December leading up to Christmas, I turn the page to yet another delightful painting by Maud Lewis.
Hope Dalvay also has a book in our #GiftAtlantic collection, My Year as a Space Cadet.
