Fierce Ink Press Supports Kids Help Phone with the Release of Becoming Fierce Anthology
Becoming Fierce: Teen Stories IRL, a collection of creative non-fiction pieces written by Atlantic Canadian authors, releases on September 23. Twenty per cent of proceeds of sales go to Kids Help Phone, chosen by Canadian author Susin Nielsen, who contributed the foreword.
“I’m very honoured that I was asked to write the foreword for this wonderful and important anthology of creative non-fiction shorts” says Nielsen. “Becoming Fierce touches on topics that a lot of teens will be able to identify with — family, fitting in, body image, suicide. This collection lets teens know that others have gone through similar things and made it through.”
Each short deals with something the author struggled with during his or her teen years. The goal of the anthology is to let teens know that adults do understand and that it does get better.
Appearing in the collection are Newfoundland authors Jamie Fitzpatrick, Gerard Collins, Chad Pelley, New Brunswick author Lee D. Thompson; Nova Scotia authors Ben Boudreau, Jo Treggiari, Chris Benjamin, Alison DeLory; and PEI authors Patti Larsen and Cale Liom.
The shorts were all originally published as part of the Fierce Shorts digital imprint, which publishes monthly through Fierce Ink Press with twenty per cent of sales going to a charity of the authors choice.
Two official launches for Becoming Fierce are being held on October 18. Broken Books in St. John’s will be hosting the Newfoundland launch (2 to 4 p.m.) and Just Us! Coffeehouse on Spring Garden Road in Halifax will be the location for the Nova Scotia launch (2 to 4 p.m.). Events in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island will be held later this year.
