Poets, readers: rejoice! National Poetry Month is upon us. The League of Canadian Poets is encouraging people from coast to coast to celebrate all things poetry this April. The occasion brings together schools, publishers, booksellers, literary organizations and poets to promote literacy and reading.
This year’s theme is time, meant to honour the hours, days and weeks spent writing and consuming poetry in all it’s mediums.
From songs and the oral tradition to the page and beyond, time has traversed language, culture and progress to give us an invisible and unbreakable framework for everything we do. As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, time perseveres: language, land and community celebrate an ongoing history of their own.

Atlantic Canada is producing some magnificent books of poetry. George Elliott Clarke’s Gold, M. Travis Lane’s The Witch of the Inner Wood and Shannon Webb-Campbell’s Still No Word have all shone in past years.
