CBC Radio and the Halifax Public Library suggest Maritime reads for the summer
It feels like Atlantic Canadian books are everywhere these days, and that’s just how we like it here at Atlantic Books Today!
Yesterday CBC Radio’s Maritime Noon dedicated a segment to books by Maritime authors written in and about our unique region.
The show featured Halifax Public Library staff members Joanne McCarthy O’Leary and Kristina Parlee recommending Atlantic themed summer reads, as well as readers from across the region phoning in with their own suggestions.
Joanne and Kristina suggested listeners might enjoy:
- Black Loyalists: Southern Settlers of the First Free Black Communities in Nova Scotia by Ruth Holmes Whitehead (Nimbus Publishing)
- Cartographer of No Man’s Land by P.S. Duffy (Liveright)
- Merry Hell: the Story of the 25th Battalion (Nova Scotia Regiment) Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914-1919 by Robert N. Clements (University of Toronto Press)
- Fallsy Downsies by Stephanie Domet (Invisible Publishing)
- The August Gales: the Tragic Loss of Fishing Schooners in the North Atlantic 1926 and 1927 by Gerald Hallowell (Nimbus Publishing)
- The Clockmaker: or, the Sayins and Doings of Samuel Slick of Slickville by Thomas Chandler-Haliburton (New Canadian Library)

- For Sure by France Daigle (House of Anansi)
- Love Finds You in Prince Edward Island Canada by Susan Davis (Summerside Press)

Listeners shared their favourite Maritime books during the call-in segments, on Facebook and on Twitter. Here are some of their suggestions:
Dawn Currie of Antigonish, NS called in to champion Keeper of Tides (Breakwater Books) by Beatrice MacNeil. Dawn said, “Her work is character driven and you kind of fall in love with [the characters], even some of the ones you kind of want to hate.”
While Twitter user @buttsiejr suggested a classic children’s picture book celebrating its 25th year in 2014!
