SUMMARY:Capitalism and Dispossession Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person launch of Capitalism and Dispossession\, edited by Dave Thomas and Veldon Coburn. We’ll be joined at the event by contributors Charlotte Connolly and Sakura Saunders. The event will be moderated by Ardath Whynacht\, author of the 2022 winner of the Atlantic Book Award for Scholarly Writing\, INSURGENT LOVE. \nThis venue is wheel-chair accessible. There will be food and drink available as well books for sale by award-winning local sex shop and bookstore\, Venus Envy. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nhttps://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/capitalism-and-dispossession \nThis edited collection brings together a broad range of case studies to highlight the role of Canadian corporations in producing\, deepening and exacerbating conditions of dispossession both at home and abroad. Rather than presented as instances of exceptional greed or malice\, the cases are described as expected and inherent consequences of contemporary capitalism and/or settler colonialism. A core purpose of the book is to combine and synthesize analyses of dispossession within and outside of Canada. While the literature tends to treat the two as distinct and unrelated phenomena\, these processes are often connected\, as the normalization of settler colonialism at home can lead to indifference and acceptance of dispossession caused by Canadian companies abroad. This book brings local and global cases together in order to present a rigorous analysis of the role of Canadian corporate activity in processes of dispossession. \nThe book includes a diversity of theoretical approaches related to the overarching theme of capitalism and dispossession; however\, they share a critical analysis of capitalism and its implications on marginalized peoples at home and abroad. Included are political economy approaches that draw on the work of theorists such as David Harvey\, important interventions from Indigenous and settler colonial studies\, feminist approaches using the work of scholars such as Silvia Federici and the concept environmental racism\, which draws on both critical race theory and environmental justice literature. \nABOUT THE EDITOR \nDavid P. Thomas is an associate professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations\, Mount Allison University\, on unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and Mi’kmaw Peoples. His teaching and research interests focus on the role of Canadian actors abroad and on international political economy. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/337433048560959/

SUMMARY:Conférence de France Daigle « Déconstruire le genre »
SUMMARY:Book Launch: Gardening for Acidic Soils by Todd Boland and Jamie Ellison
DESCRIPTION:Todd Boland will be at the MUNL Botanical Garden on Tuesday\, July 19 from 6:00-8:00 PM to launch his new book\, ‘Gardening for Acidic Soils’! Books will be available for purchase during the event\, and Todd will be on hand to sign them. \nAbout the Book:Acidic soils are widespread throughout North America\, especially in humid regions or areas with high precipitation such as the eastern seaboard and the Pacific Northwest. \nHowever\, little assistance is available on how to garden specifically with acidic soils. In fact\, most advice concerns how to make acidic soil less so. Todd Boland and Jamie Ellison take a different approach; they believe in working with nature\, rather than trying to change it. \nA wide variety of ornamental plants\, both native and exotic\, thrive in acidic soil conditions or require them to survive. This book helps you develop gardens that takes advantage of acidic soil conditions\, a feature that has too often been considered a detriment. \n‘Gardening for Acidic Soils’ concentrates on building sustainable gardens that include a broad range of shrubs\, woody plants\, and perennials. These fascinating plants have a myriad of ornamental attributes with specific survival strategies for thriving in acidic soil conditions. \nThis book includes:•	The chemistry of acidic soil and plant adaptations.•	Hints and advice on specialized acidic gardens\, including peat\, bogs\, and woodlands.•	Plant portraits—trees\, shrubs\, vines\, perennials\, grasses\, and ferns—to help you create a beautiful landscape on acidic soil. \nAbout the Authors:Todd Boland is the research horticulturalist at Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Botanical Gardens and the author of numerous books on gardening and plant identification. \nJamie Ellison is an instructor at the Nova Scotia Community College in Kentville\, Nova Scotia. His specialties include plant identification\, garden design\, and horticultural presentations on unique plants and gardens. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/591331485641225/
