SUMMARY:The Girl from 108 Book Launch with author Lorraine Clements
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to the Beaconsfield Carriage House on Tuesday\, July 11th from 7-8:30pm for the launch of Lorraine Clements’ new book\, The Girl from 108. \nThe Girl from 108 is an account of the world the author grew up in at 108 King Street in Charlottetown\, where her parents operated a Boarding House which served as a home for an eclectic group of visitors who came to serve the area: builders\, plumbers\, and countrymen\, and who became her family as she was raised. \nLorraine shares the stories of the day\, from the details of her grandfather\, Pop\, in a top hat at the corner of Richmond and Queen Streets\, smoking his pipe with his friends and discussing politics\, to her awe of the women of the day —remembering their hairstyles\, their lipstick\, and the elegant swoosh of a visiting nurse’s cape. She recalls with fondness the “Kids from King Street”\, a group who grew up in the city’s homes\, parks\, establishments and stores. With a strong Catholic background\, the Boarding House had strong morals\, and Lorraine’s mother was sure to keep it that way. \n“Lorraine’s stories narrate a time in Charlottetown’s history\, which supported its budding industrial movement. She brings us into her home through the eyes of a child\, and sets us up at the kitchen table to watch the whole thing play out. There is magic\, there is mystery\, and there is social strata—even an epic love story or two\,” says Mo Duffy Cobb\, of Pownal Street Press. \nLorraine was always a strong proponent of education\, but was forced to leave early to care for her young family. She has always enjoyed writing\, and was inspired at the age of 65 to return to the University of Prince Edward Island\, graduating with her Bachelor of Arts at age 70. Lorraine married her soulmate\, Fred\, and lives in North Rustico. \n“Lorraine is an inspiration in strength and spirit\,” says Genevieve Loughlin\, Publisher of Pownal Street Press. “Pownal Street Press is excited to bring her stories to print and share this important history of growing up on Prince Edward Island.” \nJoin Lorraine and Pownal Street Press as we celebrate at her book launch on Tuesday\, July 11th from 7-8:30 pm\, at the Island’s picturesque Beaconsfield Carriage House. The author will present a short reading\, and books will be available for sale at the event. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/958831978666031/

SUMMARY:Book Launch: The End of This World: Climate Justice in So-Called Canada
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Corporate Mapping Project and The Council of Canadians\, we are co-hosting the launch of the recently released book\, The End of This World: Climate Justice in So-Called Canada. Co-author\, Emily Eaton\, will discuss the book and be in conversation with local community leaders\, water protector Michelle Paul and Council of Canadians co-executive director\, Robin Tress. \nDate: Join us Thursday\, July 13th Time: 6:30 pm ADTLocation: Glitter Bean Cafe\, 5896 Spring Garden Rd\, Halifax\, NS \nThe End of this World: Climate Justice in So-Called Canada is a “Compelling roadmap to a livable future\, where Indigenous sovereignty and climate justice go hand in hand. Together\, the authors envision a near future where oil and gas stay in the ground; where a caring economy provides social supports for all; where wealth is redistributed from the bloated billionaire class; and where stolen land is rightfully reclaimed under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples.” \nAccessibility information: Glitter Bean café has a wheelchair accessible entrance through the ramp on the patio. \nThis event is taking place on Kijipuktuk in Mi’kma’ki\, the unceded\, unsurrendered ancestral land of the Mi’kmaq people. Indigenous peoples have been and continue to be on the frontline of the resistance to extraction projects and at the forefront of movements for climate justice and land back in so-called Canada. Their voices must be at the centre of conversations on creating a new world. \nLearn more about the book: https://btlbooks.com/book/the-end-of-this-world \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/287218577221926/

SUMMARY:K.R. Byggdin in Conversation with Cooper Lee Bombardier
DESCRIPTION:*PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED – WE WILL UPDATE THIS EVENT PAGE ONCE A NEW DATE HAS BEEN CHOSEN* \nThe Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia and Dalhousie Libraries present an evening of conversation between Cooper Lee Bombardier and K.R. Byggdin\, 2023 winner of the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award for their book Wonder World\, a novel that explores the possibilities of queer belonging in small town Canada. \nThursday\, July 27 at 7pm\, Glitter Bean Cafe (5896 Spring Garden Road). \nOn-site book sales by Bookmark Halifax. \nABOUT THE BOOK \n“What this town has done\, it’s like pickling people. Taking us when we’re young and fresh and vulnerable\, sticking us in a jar and filling us with all these rules they hope will preserve us from the rotting decay of worldliness. But you can’t brine someone in that much guilt and shame their whole lives and expect them not to change. Shrivel into mere husks of their former selves\, sour as vinegar.” \nTwenty-seven-year-old Isaac Funk is broke\, drifting\, and questioning his lonely existence on the East Coast. Having left his conservative hometown of Newfield\, Manitoba full of piss and vinegar\, Isaac’s dreams of studying music and embracing queer culture in Halifax have gradually fizzled out. When his grandfather dies and leaves him a substantial inheritance\, Isaac is pulled back to the Prairies for the first time in ten years. Finding his father Abe just as enigmatic as always and his extended family more fragmented than ever\, Isaac begins to wonder if there will ever be a place for him in Newfield. Is the prodigal son home for good\, or is it time to cut and run once more? \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/188429320656891/

SUMMARY:Halifax Book Launch for Leo McKay Jr.'s "What Comes Echoing Back"
DESCRIPTION:A poignant novel imbued with music from the Giller Prize — shortlisted author of Like This and Twenty-Six that follows two social outcasts as they navigate through their traumatic pasts. \nThe worst moment of Sam’s life was captured on video and shared across the Internet for all to gawk at. This is something she has in common with Robot\, who just wants to move past the mistakes he’s made\, if only his small town will let him. When the two meet in a high school music class\, they start to find their way to each other. Music might offer a way not only forward\, but forward together\, if Sam and Robot can overcome the echoes of the moments that made them infamous. \nThe past reverberates in ways we don’t expect\, in this new novel by Giller Prize — shortlisted author Leo McKay\, Jr. From family secrets and old relationships that resurface\, to the tape loops that endlessly replay private moments of trauma and despair\, What Comes Echoing Back travels back and forth in time to get to what’s true\, with humour\, humanity\, and the healing power of music. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2223637984508681/
