SUMMARY:Tertulia - Jordan House and Asaf Rashid on Solidarity Beyond Bars
DESCRIPTION:Tertulia – Jordan House and Asaf Rashid on Solidarity Beyond Bars \nTuesday\, March 21 at 7:00pm (Atlantic time)Charlotte Street Art Centre Auditorium\, 732 Charlotte St.Wheelchair accessible.Share the Facebook event notice. \nTertulias Fredericton\, the Coalition Against Prison Expansion (CAPE) NB and Fernwood Publishing invite you to the launch of Solidarity Beyond Bars: Unionzing Prison Labour by Jordan House and Asaf Rashid. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nPrisons don’t work\, but prisoners do. Prisons are often critiqued as unjust\, but we hear little about the daily labour of incarcerated workers — what they do\, how they do it\, who they do it for and under which conditions. Unions protect workers fighting for better pay and against discrimination and occupational health and safety concerns\, but prisoners are denied this protection despite being the lowest paid workers with the least choice in what they do — the most vulnerable among the working class. Starting from the perspective that work during imprisonment is not “rehabilitative\,” this book examines the reasons why people should care about prison labour and how prisoners have struggled to organize for labour power in the past. Unionizing incarcerated workers is critical for both the labour movement and struggles for prison justice\, this book argues\, to negotiate changes to working conditions as well as the power dynamics within prisons themselves. \nRead the case for a prisoners’ union here by the authors in Briarpatch here. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nJordan House is an assistant professor in the Department of Labour Studies at Brock University. His research focuses on prison labour and prisoner-worker organizing\, new forms of worker organization and labour movement renewal.
SUMMARY:Milton Acorn Centenary
DESCRIPTION:The 100th anniversary of the birth of noted Canadian poet Milton Acorn will be observed with a life celebration at the Haviland Club\, 2 Haviland Street\, Charlottetown. \nBorn in Charlottetown on March 30\, 1923\, Acorn worked as a carpenter before finding his voice as a poet in Montreal in the 1950s\, alongside other poets including Al Purdy\, Irving Layton\, and Leonard Cohen. While he also spent time in Vancouver and Toronto\, Acorn’s very personal work includes many poems and prose pieces about Prince Edward Island\, its landscape\, history\, and people. An individualist with strong views\, his work ranges from the stridently political to the warmly personal. \nAcorn was recognized by a group of Canadian poets with a special medal as the “People’s Poet” of Canada\, awarded in 1970\, and received the Governor General’s Medal for English-language poetry in 1976. He was given an honorary degree from UPEI in 1977. Acorn died in Charlottetown in 1986. \nThere will be reminiscences\, readings\, music\, and two National Film Board films on the Island poet will be shown. Admission is by donation. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/535471328767684/
