There is parking on campus\, and it is close to a bus stop. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nIn Abolitionist Intimacies\, El Jones examines the movement to abolish prisons through the Black feminist principles of care and collectivity. Understanding the history of prisons in Canada in their relationship to settler colonialism and anti-Black racism\, Jones observes how practices of intimacy become imbued with state violence at carceral sites including prisons\, policing and borders\, as well as through purported care institutions such as hospitals and social work. The state also polices intimacy through mechanisms such as prison visits\, strip searches and managing community contact with incarcerated people. Despite this\, Jones argues\, intimacy is integral to the ongoing struggles of prisoners for justice and liberation through the care work of building relationships and organizing with the people inside. Through characteristically fierce and personal prose and poetry\, and motivated by a decade of prison justice work\, Jones observes that abolition is not only a political movement to end prisons; it is also an intimate one deeply motivated by commitment and love. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nEl Jones is a poet\, journalist\, professor and activist living in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. She teaches at Mount Saint Vincent University\, where she was named the 15th Nancy’s Chair in Women’s Studies in 2017. She was Halifax’s Poet Laureate from 2013 to 2015. She is the author of Live from the Afrikan Resistance!\, a collection of poems about resisting white colonialism. Her work focuses on social justice issues\, such as feminism\, prison abolition\, anti-racism and decolonization. Since 2016\, she has co-hosted a radio show called Black Power Hour\, on CKDU-FM where listeners from prisons call in to rap and read their poetry\, providing a voice to people who rarely get a wide audience. \nDr. Gladys Lynn Jones is an African-Canadian woman born and raised in Truro\, Nova Scotia. Throughout her life\, Lynn has been active in the pursuit of justice\, working tirelessly for many causes and organizations that seek to eradicate racism\, secure human rights\, and achieve fair labour practices. She was the first Black person to join the executive ranks of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC)\, and also served as a National Vice-President of the Canadian Employment and Immigration Union (CEIU). In 1993 Lynn became the first Canadian-born African-Canadian woman to run in a federal election. Lynn is currently the Chair of the Global African Congress (Nova Scotia Chapter)\, which seeks reparations for the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and other injustices and whose organization published the ground breaking book authored by children they engaged called “R is for Reparations.” \nDamini Awoyiga is a 15-year-old grade high student She is a spoken word poet\, writer\, activist\, fashion designer\, singer and art illustrator. Damini is the founder of the Afro-Indigenous Book Club\, a book club she created to encourage young people to read books written by Black and Indigenous authors and to share the realities and experiences of Black and Indigenous Canadians. Damini was the Junior artist in residence for Wellness Within\, a community organization working for reproductivejustice\, prison abolition and health equity. She was also a Youth Ambassador for Digitally Lit\, a youth-led strategy that aims to empower young Atlantic Canadians. She has used Digitally Lit’s social media to create a campaign for accessibility awareness inbuilt spaces. Damini is the youth entrepreneur behind Damini Creatives. A mask and fashion enterprise that she launched in the middle of the 2020 pandemic. She made headlines in 2020 with her bright\, colourful and vibrant African fabric masks. She was CBC’s artist in residence for the Michaelle Jean Foundation’s Canadian Black Summit held in July 2022\, where she hosted an interactive community poetry booth. Plus\, there will be some treats from Food Culture Place for everyone to try. \nPop down to celebrate these three great books with us as we close out Boulder Books’ 20th year in business! \nABOUT THE BOOKS \n–Jellies in the Belly \nSwim far sea turtle\, swim far . . .  \nJoin Lally the leatherback sea turtle from her birth on a tropical beach to her long migration north and then back again.  During her journey\, the sea turtle protects fish populations by feeding on jellyfish.  \nDuring Lally’s journey we learn about the dangers facing sea turtles\, many of which are created by people. But we are also reminded of how amazing and special sea turtles are.  \nThe story includes a step-by-step instructional guide for children to create their own ink and watercolour leatherback images to enhance learning\, creativity\, and fun. \nThis book will appeal to children aged 5-9. \n–Hard Aground: Untold Stories from the Pollux and Truxton Disaster \nIn the pre-dawn hours of February 18\, 1942\, three American warships zigzagged in convoy along the south coast of Newfoundland. Caught in a raging blizzard\, the three ships ran aground on one of the most inhospitable stretches of coastline in the world—less than three miles apart\, within eight minutes of each other. The Wilkes freed herself. The Truxtun and Pollux could not. Fighting frigid temperatures\, wild surf\, and a heavy oil slick\, a few sailors\, through ingenuity and sheer grit\, managed to gain shore—only to be stranded under cliffs some 200 feet high. From there\, local miners mounted an arduous rescue mission.  \nBased on eyewitness accounts of survivors and rescuers\, and corroborated by archival and historical research\, Bett Fitzpatrick tells the story of the men who saved themselves\, the miners who carried survivors up the cliffs on their backs\, and to the people of St. Lawrence who opened their homes and their hearts to the victims.  \nAmong them are seaman Edward Bergeron\, who scaled the cliff and brought help\, Lanier Phillips\, the only black man to survive\, Ena\, who collected food and blankets and snapped the only pictures of that horrific day\, and Clara\, who took the last survivor home and nursed him through the night. \n–Food Culture Place: Stories\, Traditions\, and Recipes of Newfoundland \n**Winner of the Gourmand International 2022 World Cookbook Award for Food Heritage Cookbooks** \nMany homes in Newfoundland still hold well-stocked pantries of bottled moose or rabbit\, freezers of corned capelin\, and eider ducks at the ready\, waiting for a special meal. Caught in a raging blizzard\, the three ships ran aground on one of the most inhospitable stretches of coastline in the world—less than three miles apart\, within eight minutes of each other. The Wilkes freed herself. The Truxtun and Pollux could not. Fighting frigid temperatures\, wild surf\, and a heavy oil slick\, a few sailors\, through ingenuity and sheer grit\, managed to gain shore—only to be stranded under cliffs some 200 feet high. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening of poetry at the Union Square Hall!  \nAnnick and Alison will be doing a Zine Workshop on the afternoon of the 19th at the Union Square Hall– we couldn’t let Annick come all this way and not do a reading too!  \nAnnick MacAskill’s most recent poetry collection is Shadow Blight (Gaspereau Press\, 2022)\, which has been nominated for a 2022 Governor General’s Award in Literature! She is also the author of No Meeting Without Body (Gaspereau Press\, 2018)\, which was a finalist for the J.M. Abraham Award and the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award\, and Murmurations (Gaspereau Press\, 2020). Her poems have appeared in journals across Canada and abroad\, and in the Best Canadian Poetry anthology series. A settler of French and Scottish ancestry\, she lives in K’jipuktuk (Halifax)\, on the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. \nAlison Smith is the author of three books of poetry and one chapbook from Gaspereau Press. Her most recent collection\, This Kind of Thinking Does No Good\, was awarded the 2019 J.M. Abraham Award for Atlantic Poetry and was shortlisted for the 2020 Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award.
