SUMMARY:David Bergen Hybird Book Launch (Away from the Dead)
DESCRIPTION:The launch will be hosted live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers\, Grant Park and also available as a simultaneous YouTube stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1JG8ISBuBs \nBefore arriving\, please review details of how to attend physical events here at the store: https://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/event-attendance \nThe venue is accessible.— \nJoin us as we celebrate the launch of David Bergen’s new novel Away from the Dead (Goose Lane Editions). This event features a reading and a conversation hosted by Maurice Mierau. Presented as part of THIN AIR 2023: The Winnipeg International Writers Festival. \nhttps://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/9781773103105/david-bergen/away-from-the-dead \nIn Away from the Dead\, David Bergen takes us to a place where chaos reigns\, where answers come from everywhere and nowhere\, and where both the beauty and horror of humanity are on full display. As anarchists\, Bolsheviks\, and the White Army all come and go\, each claiming freedom and justice\, Bergen embeds his readers into the lives of characters connected through love\, family\, and loyalty. A bookseller south of Kiev deserts the army and writes poetry to his love back home; an adopted Mennonite-Ukrainian stableboy runs with the anarchists only to discover that love and the planting of crops is preferable to killing; a beautiful young peasant tries to stop a Mennonite landowner from stealing her child. In a world of violence\, these three learn to love and hate and love again\, hoping\, against all odds\, that one can turn away from the dead. \nPraised by the Montreal Gazette as “one of Canada’s best writers” and by the Globe and Mail as “inventive and electrifying\,” David Bergen is the bestselling author of numerous acclaimed novels and short-story collections\, including The Time In Between\, winner of the Scotiabank Giller Prize\, and Out of Mind\, winner of the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award. Away from the Dead is his thirteenth book of fiction. He lives in Winnipeg. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1266641900720273/

SUMMARY:Double Book Launch: Back in the Land of the Living and How to Be Alone
DESCRIPTION:Join Eva Crocker and Heather Nolan at La Petite Librairie Drawn & Quarterly at 176 rue Bernard O at 7 pm on Wednesday\, September 20th for the double launch of Back in the Land of the Living and How to Be Alone! The evening will feature a reading\, a conversation\, a Q&A and a signing. \nThe event is free and open to all. Masks will be available free of charge upon entry.////////////////////////////////////////////////////////A sexy\, unforgettable story about love and longing in a time of chaos by Scotiabank Giller Prize longlisted author Eva Crocker. \nBack in the Land of the Living brings us a year in the life of Marcy\, a young queer woman who moves to Montreal in the fall of 2019 after making a mess of her life in St. John’s. Alone in a big city on the brink of lockdown\, Marcy finds herself working an assortment of odd and sometimes dangerous\, sometimes ethically questionable jobs\, and swept up in a tumultuous romance with a charismatic woman. As friends\, loyalties\, and philosophies collide\, Marcy tries to carve out a future amidst the intertwined crises of late capitalism\, the climate apocalypse\, and the Covid-19 pandemic. \nWith all the candour\, wit\, and bracing wisdom that have won her accolades and awards across Canada\, Eva Crocker gives us a sexy\, unforgettable story about love and longing in a time of chaos. \nEva Crocker grew up in Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland) and lives in Tiohti:áke (Montreal). Her debut novel All I Ask was long-listed for the 2020 Giller Prize and won the 2020 BMO Winterset Award. Her short story collection Barreling Forward was shortlisted for Dayne Ogilvie Prize for Emerging LGBTQS2 Writers and won the Alistair MacLeod Award for Short Fiction and the CAA Emerging Author’s Award. Her forthcoming novel Back in the Land of the Living will be published by House of Anansi Press in August 2023. She is a PhD student in Concordia University’s Interdisciplinary Humanities program where she is researching visual art from Newfoundland. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////A breathtaking duet of spare\, poetic novellas documenting the double-edged sword of self-acceptance.Heather Nolan returns with How to Be Alone\, a pair of novellas that depict the euphoric highs of a Queer awakening and the crushing lows of feeling Othered in a world that isn’t built for you. In this short but weighty book\, Nolan explores themes such as isolation\, trauma\, and loss against the vibrant streets of Montreal. Here\, in a city famous for bringing people together\, the streets serve as a palette with a different purpose: a foil for those struggling to connect with the world around them. \nHeather Nolan’s work has been published in numerous journals and anthologies across Canada\, the US\, and the UK\, including ARC Poetry Magazine\, EVENT Magazine\, Riddle Fence\, and Solliloquies Anthology. They are the author of the critically acclaimed novella This Is Agatha Falling and the poetry collection Land of the Rock: Talamh an Carriag. They’ve also worked as a musician (they are the former guitarist for the band\, Lady Brett Ashley)\, photographer\, and knitwear designer. Nolan’s knitwear designs\, published under the name Oileánach Knits\, use making as a tool for connecting with place\, heritage\, and lost ancestral language.////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Librairie Drawn & Quarterly would like to acknowledge that our events and bookstores are located on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. Many of us refer to Montreal as our home\, but it is named Tiohtiá:ke. It has always been a gathering place for many First Nations and continues to be home to a diverse population of Indigenous peoples.
\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1953926511652186/

SUMMARY:USING TRANSFORMATIVE LIFE EXPERIENCE TO WRITE FICTION with Fawn Parker
DESCRIPTION:USING TRANSFORMATIVE LIFE EXPERIENCE TO WRITE FICTION workshop with Fawn Parker \nIn Fawn Parker’s Auto-Fiction workshop\, participants will discuss and explore methods of using real life experience in fictional storytelling. Powerful fiction contains some level of truth\, whether it is in action\, character\, or emotion. Obscuring true events through fictionalization introduces infinite opportunity for interesting\, effective\, and impactful prose\, with human experience at its core. With examples from Parker’s forthcoming auto-novel Hi it’s me (M&S 2024)\, the group will work on visual outlines transferring their lived stories into literary plots\, and develop an “elevator pitch” for an auto-fictional story or novel. \nPresenter Bio:Fawn Parker is a Giller-nominated author of five books including What We Both Know (M&S) and the forthcoming poetry collection Soft Inheritance and auto-memoir Hi it’s me (M&S). Fawn is a PhD student in creative writing at the University of New Brunswick. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/847167980316588/
