Imagining the North in Canadian Literature

January 13, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - April 7, 2022 @ 2:00 pm America/Halifax

ENGL 2463: Imagining the North in Canadian Literature with Renée Hulan

——

The class is currently being offered online, but may switch to in-person later in the term. Register on the SMU website: https://studio.smu.ca/librarycourses

This course unsettles the representation of Canada as “true north” in literature and culture. By studying northern historiography and reading selected literary works depicting the Canadian North, we will see how the imagined North has changed over time.

The readings will include selections by Inuit and other northern Indigenous peoples, and the examination will be presented in relation to important contemporary topics, such as Arctic sovereignty, climate change, and Indigenous knowledge.
