SUMMARY:Past to Apron
DESCRIPTION:In 1617\, Lord Falkland’s colonists came to Newfoundland carrying\, among other things\, barrels of malt\, hops\, aqua vitae\, wine and mead on their ships. Thus\, began the time-honoured tradition of countering the rugged east coast environment of North America with a nip of something stronger. Bottoms Up outlines the story of alcohol in Newfoundland and Labrador: the what\, where\, how and why of the substance that helped shape so much of our present-day culture. With a history influenced by our predominantly English and Irish roots\, this talk guides the listener through the seven ages of alcohol. From early modern times and the age of necessity\, to excess\, attempts at control\, the temperance movement\, prohibition\, and beyond. Distilling four centuries of fact and anecdote\, Sheilah Roberts Lukins serves up a revealing and often amusing survey of our fascination with good spirits. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1832863573724774/
