Description
“Not having a fire was a serious problem. Emma couldn’t imagine how cold the house would get without a fire for a whole day.”
It’s a cold winter’s day in 1813. Emma’s older brother William is very ill; and inside her family’s log cabin, the fireplace is dark and cold. A snow storm is fast approaching. Emma must journey through the forest and across the dangerous ice of Miller’s Creek to fetch a kettle of hot coals from the nearest cabin one mile away. How can she do this all by herself?
