Description
African Chronicles is a memoir covering
two years in the lives of Burris and Louanne
Devanney, but also spanning forty-five years of development work in Africa. It is a montage of compelling episodes – tragic, comic, ironic, capricious and inspiring – depicting critical junctures in the lives of remarkable individuals and of countries on the edge: V.1- Rhodesia-Zimbabwe and V.2 – Nigeria-Biafra. Embedded in the narrative are singular perspectives on Africa’s recent history and the “Great Game of Development.” The memoir engages with immediacy and retrospective insight the seemingly brutal question: What
happened to the bright prospects of post-colonial Africa? This question animates the entire memoir, making it a narrative of empathy and understanding. “A searing indictment of the “Masters of
Development” – recounted with the wit, clarity, and brevity that only a true literary craftsman could possess. . . .” Uzoma Esonwanne, Ph.D., Professor of English, University of Toronto.
