'ichael Wilkshire has written extensively and published on the French presence in Newfoundland, with a particular emphasis on 19th-century writings of French visitors to the province and the iconography of the French Shore.
A native England, he moved to Newfoundland in 1966 to teach French at Memorial University in St. John's. He earned an MA from Carleton University and a doctorate from the Université de Dijon, France, and continued to teach at Memorial until his retirement.
His published works include A Gentleman in the Outports: Gobineau and Newfoundland (Ottawa: Carleton University Press, 1993). A Mixed Marriage is Wilkshire's latest contribution to the field.
