The Purple Frog
Angela Jeffreys, illustrated by Mike Motz
OC Publishing
The Purple Frog (available in Mi’kmaw and English) is a delightful children’s book that tells the story of Hubert, a young purple frog who lives within a community of green frogs. In the beginning of the story, Hubert is concerned because he is different. He is smart and purple and all the other frogs at school are green. Hubert is bullied at home and school because he is not like all the rest of the frogs.
The problem seems to worsen when Hubert begins to develop green spots all over his body. Hubert the purple frog with green spots finds creative ways to disguise his transformation, for fear of drawing more negative attention to himself.
However, as his transformation from purple to green nears completion, Hubert begins to realize that being the same is not fun at all and he would prefer to be different. He would prefer to have his purple skin back.
The Purple Frog, written by Angela Jeffreys, is a coming of age story that helps children (and adults) realize they are not alone. It teaches about the negative impact of bullying and how it can isolate and hurt others. It’s about accepting who you are and learning to love yourself. Hubert grows within the story and becomes comfortable within his own skin and realizes that he was fabulous all along.
The illustrations by Mike Motz are bright, vibrant and eye catching. They encourage the reader to stay on the page and explore the whole scene. To slow down and enjoy.
Overall, The Purple Frog is a book whose lesson should be learned by all humankind. Be kind. Be unique. And celebrate who you are.
