SUMMARY:National Public Reading - The Way I Feel
DESCRIPTION:The Way I Feelby Susan WhiteISBN: 9781773661193Price: $22.95 \nBook Summary: \nNo Problem is too big to run away from. \nGinny Collins has never run away from anything — not her complicated family of origin\, and not her lonely marriage. But when an old postcard falls out of her mother-in-law’s photo album\, Ginny is overtaken with the need to do just that. \nGinny quickly packs up a suitcase and camping trailer and drives away from her grown children\, her forty-year marriage to a husband who can’t even heat up his own fries. As the miles fall away behind her\, she starts to examine everything she’s held true. Is the life she’s living the only one available to her? Are the dreams she cast aside long ago still waiting to be realized? When she leaves her home behind\, will she also be able to shed her unhappiness and regrets? Ginny’s impulsive decision begins a search she never anticipated\, and she starts to uncover the truth she’s worked so hard to ignore. \nThe Way I Feel is a powerful exploration of women’s longing for more. \nAuthor Bio: \nSusan White was born in New Brunswick\, and as a teenager\, her family moved to the Kingston Peninsula. She only left long enough to earn her BA and BEd at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. She and her husband raised four children and ran a small farm while she taught elementary school. Since retiring\, she is grateful to now have time to work on her writing. She is the author of Waiting for Still Water\, Maple Sugar Pie and four middle-grade novels\, including the Ann Connor Brimer Award-winning novel The Year Mrs. Montague Cried. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/996091708259830/

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH! Sun\, Seed & Soil by Dan Rubin
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, August 31 to celebrate the launch of Sun\, Seed & Soil: Tips & Techniques for a Northern Garden by Dan Rubin! \nThis is a public event so all are welcome. Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be served\, and copies of Sun\, Seed & Soil will be available for purchase. Pop by to chat about all things gardening and learn about Dan’s wonderful new book! \nAbout the Book:Moving to Newfoundland from the Gulf Islands of British Columbia was a shock for long-time gardener Dan Rubin. Accustomed to warm\, calm\, and relatively predictable weather\, Rubin faced long winters\, strong winds\, and constant salt spray at his new property perched on the edge of the North Atlantic. \nTwenty years later\, Rubin’s productive and lush seaside garden is filled with a range of crops\, from tomatoes\, squash\, and greens to plums\, artichokes\, and even peaches. \nSun\, Seed & Soil is a collection of practical tips and techniques for gardening in colder\, northern climates based on Rubin’s experiences and discoveries. The book offers valuable advice for Canadian gardeners—particularly in Atlantic Canada—as well as those in the northern United States\, or anyone facing similar challenging growing conditions. \nSun\, Seed and Soil provides insight into:–Choosing the right seeds to plant and build rich\, organic soil –Protecting plants from wind and cold to extend the growing season by months–Using sustainable\, regenerative approaches and avoid the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers–Growing common garden food plants\, herbs\, flowers\, fruit trees and bushes \nAbout the Author:Dan Rubin is a gardener\, educator\, and garden designer who leads local initiatives on food production\, food distribution\, and food security. He is author of four books and has written for Rural Delivery magazine and Gardens Canada. Dan leads workshops on extending seasons and produced videos on seed starting and seed saving\, and is a regular gardening expert on CBC radio. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/675835607773523/

SUMMARY:Meet author WHIT FRASER at Halifax Central Library!
DESCRIPTION:Join author Whit Fraser for a discussion about his novel\, Cold Edge of Heaven! \n–About the Book– \nSet in 1924 at a desolate police outpost on Devon Island in Canada’s far north\, Cold Edge of Heaven is a story of murder\, mystery\, and love—intensified by a clash of cultures between Inuit guides and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers who live and work alongside them. \nWill Grant is one of three constables who\, along with their guides and families\, are dropped on the windy gravel beach of Dundas Harbour. But no amount of training—not even the horrors of the First World War—would prepare the officers for ice-locked isolation and physical threats from ocean storms\, blizzards\, avalanches\, months of darkness\, and marauding polar bears. \nThe mental and emotional strain are exacerbated by two mysterious and violent deaths. When the Inuit abandon the outpost\, Grant realizes that his values and beliefs have changed in ways he could not have imagined. \nAlthough alone and crushed by the inexplicable murders\, Grant has learned much about the Arctic through Naudla\, wife of one of the guides—and his secret lover. Through her\, he discovers the magnificent beauty of the land and ice-covered ocean. This is not a frozen hell\, but rather the cold edge of heaven. \nCold Edge of Heaven is a historical fiction adventure set in the Canadian Arctic at the now-abandoned Royal Canadian Mounted Police outpost of Dundas Harbour. Stations such as these were central to Canada asserting its sovereignty over the vast far north\, with the Mounties serving as “human flagpoles.” \n–About the Author– \nWhit Fraser is a journalist\, author\, and vice-regal consort of Canadian Governor General Mary Simon. He is winner of the 2019 NorthWords Book Prize for True North Rising\, a memoir of his years living and working in Arctic communities that was republished this year by Random House Canada. He also served as chair of the Canadian Polar Commission\, and as executive director of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami\, Canada’s national Inuit organization. \nFraser was inspired to write Cold Edge of Heaven after visiting an abandoned Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment at Dundas Harbour on Devon Island\, which includes three hilltop graves. \n–Praise for Cold Edge of Heaven– \n“True North Rising is really a deeply moving love story—for a place\, a certain woman\, a family of friends and colleagues\, and a set of principles and aspirations. I couldn’t put it down.”–Elizabeth Hay\, author of the Giller Prize-winning ‘Late Nights on Air’ \n“Whit Fraser’s ‘Cold Edge of Heaven’ is a hypnotic and fascinating tale of the Far North. Few Canadians know this magical world as well as Fraser\, who was for decades the pre-eminent reporter on northern affairs. He writes beautifully and knows his landscape intimately. He also weaves a tale of mystery that is dramatic and compelling. A magnificent page-turner!”–Roy MacGregor OC\, author of ‘Canoe Country: The Making of Canada’ \nInformation about this event is also available from Halifax Public Libraries: https://halifax.bibliocommons.com/events/64b98695804cbd28001caa11 \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1029680158467458/
