SUMMARY:Opening Night: Jesse Wente\, Alex Pugsley\, and David Bergen
DESCRIPTION:Opening Night at AfterWords features David Bergen and Alex Pugsley reading from and talking about their recent books\, followed by Jesse Wente in conversation with journalist and teacher Trina Roache. \nJesse Wente’s book Unreconciled: Family\, Truth\, and Indigenous Resistance is a moving\, generous\, beautifully written call to action that asks readers to prioritize truth over reconciliation\, as a path to deeper understanding\, and maybe a way to heal. Wente looks at indigenous representation and identity through a pop culture lens\, and explores and exposes the “two-founding nations” myth Canada is built on. And yet\, he never veers from writing with humour and with heart. Unreconciled is a galvanizing memoir and a heartfelt manifesto. \nJesse will be interviewed by journalist and teacher Trina Roache. Their conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A. Books will be available for sale. \nJesse is a husband and father\, as well as a writer\, broadcaster\, speaker and arts administrator. Born and raised in Toronto\, his family comes from Chicago and Genaabaajing Anishinaabek and he is a member of the Serpent River First Nation. Jesse is best known for more than two decades spent as a columnist for CBC Radio’s Metro Morning. In 2018\, Jesse was named the founding director of the Indigenous Screen Office and in summer 2020 he was appointed Chair of the Canada Council for the Arts. Jesse received the Arbor Award from the University of Toronto in 2021 for his volunteer contributions and was recently appointed a Senior Fellow of Massey College. His first book “Unreconciled: Family\, Truth and Indigenous Resistance” is a national bestseller and was picked as one of best books of 2021 by Chapters-Indigo\, Apple Books and The Globe and Mail. Jesse has also recently been nominated for the Kobo Emerging Writers Prize in Non-Fiction \nThis ticket includes both events. SUMMARY:Postponed- Challenge Your Creative Writing\, with Emma Května
DESCRIPTION:Join this group coaching workshop where we’ll talk about the ‘rules’ of writing and things we’ve learnt\, heard or seen in our writing life that we now have ingrained into us. These are things that may lead us to believe we have to write a certain way\, or feel we’re supposed to write about particular subjects\, but really we know deep down it just doesn’t feel right! We’ll be identifying the edges of the box that we’re in with our art\, the invisible boundaries that we believe we can’t cross. We’ll be examining these cross-section points and boundary lines\, asking ourselves why is that boundary there? Does it serve my writing? Is it actually helpful in giving me guidance/structure or is in inhibiting me? And we’ll discuss alternative ways to write and how to bend or break the rules of writing. As Pablo Picasso supposedly once said: “Learn the rules like a pro\, so you can break them like an artist.” \nFor more information\, and to register (as space is limited)\, please call the Pictou Library at (902) 485-5021. \nAbout the instructor: \nEmma Května is a Canadian writer and poet with Czech roots\, currently living in Nova Scotia on the traditional unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq Nation. Her work has appeared in Filling Station and is forthcoming in Planisphere Quarterly and the anthology “Framework of the Human Body” by Bell Press. In 2019\, her short fiction was shortlisted in a UK writing contest. Emma is also a musician\, artist\, and proud Sagittarius. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/808610453671040/

\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/615093137001318/
